A Month Of Dates... Some Romantic, Some In JavaScript
We might have forgotten Valentine’s Day, but we won’t forget this JavaScript update
Hello to our (increased number of) readers!
Much like a well-structured CSS or FIGMA file (or that one traffic light that works during load-shedding), we’re here to bring order to the chaotic world of user interfaces - from UX to front-end development.
In this edition: A new way JavaScript manages dates, the 2024 State of React and some cool UI Animation news. Also, some job opportunities we think are worth looking at!
It's hard to believe it's already been a month since our last recap!
Speaking of time as a unit of measure - and things that are hard to believe - it seems that 2025 is the year that we finally get a new way to manage dates in JavaScript. MDN just added 270 pages to their documentation of the upcoming Temporal API. If you currently use a library like Date FNS (or bless your soul, Moment.js), it might be worth switching to one of the approved TC39 polyfills. If you want to dive deeper into how JavaScript even handles dates and time units, check out Iago Lastra's recent "How long is a second in JavaScript?".
The 2024 State of React results are out. There aren't that many surprises. The community seem to be equally split on React Server Components (RSC), and everyone seems pretty excited about the new React Compiler. Create React App still retains the biggest chunk of community mindshare, even bigger than Next.js, despite its creator (Dan Abramov) publicly highlighting various problems with it. Luckily the React team finally decided enough is enough, and announced (on Valentine's Day of all days) that they are officially sunsetting of Create React App. However, this simply makes it official, which has been a foregone conclusion for a long time - since CRA hasn't shipped a single new release in 3 years now.
It's been quite a month for anyone interested in UI Animation (whether as a dev and/or developer). Framer published the winners of last year's Framer Awards - showcasing some super creative uses of animation. Perhaps fittingly, the library previously known as Framer Motion (which has now spun off into its own dedicated project called "Motion") also released a compilation of common animation patterns. At the same time, a strong contender for the position of a de-facto Tailwind animation library appeared on the scene, called Tailwind Motion.
