Hello World, Hello 2025!

The first ever FEDSA Feed is here.

Welcome to the first FEDSA Feed.

We aim to highlight some important events in the world of user interfaces (from UX to front-end development) that happen each month.

Much like you dear reader, we are frustrated by the sheer amount of noise and click-bait out there, so we promise that the below is AI-free, written and compiled by real humans, for other humans - as concisely as possible.

Here are three useful things from January:

  • The UX hiring market is still a relentless dumpster fire. Jared Spool released a super comprehensive investigation into Why the UX Job Market is Such a Mess Right Now, which also includes some solid recommendations to help you navigate "this new post-inversion UX job market [that] requires different job-seeking skills and practices than what worked before the inversion". Also check out Schalk Venter's Feedback for Juniors and a fairly recent SyntaxFM episode: Are Companies Hiring?

  • Since mid-2024 the world of HTML and CSS has been on the receiving end of a litany of paradigm-changing updates. Even seniors are struggling to keep up with everything coming down the pipeline. Chris Coyier compiled a phenomenal Relatively New Things You Should Know about HTML Heading Into 2025. However, even if you don't touch HTML and CSS you will feel the downstream effects in design-land. The Smashing Magazine newsletter just published New Front-End Features For Designers in 2025

  • Our good friend Schalk Neethling penned the 6th entry in 12 Days of Web at the end of last year, covering Web Components using the Declarative Shadow DOM API. Perhaps to counter all the Web Component drama in 2024, this year started on a bit more of a humorous note, with full-on mad scientist Dave Rupert's attempts to Make "this" Less Annoying - with some over-the-top ideas, and Cory LaViska (from Shoelace fame), asking "When building a component library, what component do you build first and why is it always button?" on BlueSky
