Is front-end development having an identity crisis?

If TypeScript rules, Remix rebels, and CSS evolves... what does that mean for devs?

Front-end development feels like it’s having a bit of an identity crisis. TypeScript has officially overtaken JavaScript on GitHub, Remix is reinventing itself again (this time without React), and Joshua Comeau is making CSS do literal physics. Here’s what’s shifting, and why it matters.

Whether you write code or just watch the chaos unfold, keep reading to see what’s changing.

According to the recent GitHub Octoverse 2025 report, TypeScript (for better or worse) has overtaken both Python and JavaScript as the most-used language on GitHub.

This raises an interesting question: Does this mindshare mean that TypeScript is now effectively the de facto scripting language of the web?

First, we had React Router, the library. Then we had Remix, and then we went back to React Router (but as a framework). Now we're going back to Remix again.

If you're struggling to keep track of which is the "official" routing solution, your job just got even harder after a recent announcement that the new iteration of Remix won’t even use React under the hood.

It still seems quite a way off from being production-ready, but you can read the initial announcement here.

Everyone’s favourite CSS magician, Joshua Comeau, has published a brand-new resource demonstrating how to create physics-based spring animations directly using native CSS transitions.
